500 Spanish mutineers conquered 6 million Aztecs.
Not with weapons.
Not with armies.
But with a slave girl and a priest.
Here's how they pulled off history's greatest con:

1519. The Aztec Empire rules over 6 million people.
Their capital city, Tenochtitlan, is among the three largest cities on Earth.
Their Emperor, Montezuma II, is known for his wisdom and intelligence.
Yet in just 2.5 years, they'd be utterly defeated:
Not by a vast army.
Not by superior weapons.
Not even by military might.
But by 500 Spanish mutineers who didn't even have permission to be there.
Here's how they pulled off history's greatest psychological warfare campaign:
The story starts with betrayal.
Hernán Cortés was hired by Cuba's governor, Diego Velásquez, to explore the mainland.
But before departing, Cortés learned Velásquez planned to strip him of command.
So he gathered his men and set sail without orders:
They were now officially mutineers.
500 men joined his illegal expedition.
Under Spanish law, they were now fugitives.
If they ever returned home, they faced imprisonment or death.
But fate had something unexpected in store:
On the island of Cozumel, he found two crucial allies:
• Jerónimo de Aguilar: A shipwrecked priest who spoke Mayan
• Marina: A slave girl who spoke both Mayan and Nahuatl
Cortés could now communicate with the Aztecs.
What he discovered would change everything:
The Aztec Empire was built on fear:
When they conquered new territories, they left local rulers in place.
But they demanded heavy tributes and warriors.
If payments stopped, they'd send in their Eagle Warriors.
It was essentially a massive extortion scheme:
In the city of Cempoala, Cortés saw his opportunity:
The local chiefs revealed their suffering under Aztec rule.
They were forced to pay harsh tributes.
They had to supply warriors on demand & lived in constant fear.
Within days, they pledged warriors to Cortés' cause:
Montezuma's response was revealing:
Instead of sending armies to crush this obvious threat:
He sent ambassadors bearing expensive gifts, including gold.
It was meant to win Cortés' favor.
Instead, it confirmed the Empire's vast wealth:
Then Cortés made his boldest move:
He ordered his ships destroyed at Veracruz.
This wasn't just about preventing desertion.
It was psychological warfare: Success or death were the only options.
There was no going back to Cuba:
His army grew as he marched inland:
The Tlaxcalans, who had fought the Aztecs for a century, joined him.
The Totonacs pledged their support.
More cities aligned with the Spanish.
His force swelled with native allies:
In November 1519, Cortés entered Tenochtitlan.
The city was an engineering marvel:
Built on an island, connected by massive causeways.
Home to 300,000 people - while London had just 50,000.
Montezuma welcomed them with elaborate ceremony:
Through complex political maneuvering, Cortés achieved the unthinkable:
He placed Montezuma under house arrest.
In his own capital.
Surrounded by his own army.
The Aztec Emperor became a puppet ruler:
But then something changed everything:
Smallpox arrived with the Spanish.
The Aztecs had no immunity to this Old World disease.
It killed 50% of Tenochtitlan's population in three months.
The new emperor was among the dead:
By August 1521, the great Aztec Empire had fallen.
Not through military might.
Not through superior technology.
But through a perfect storm of political manipulation, strategic alliances, and an invisible enemy no one could fight:
History's greatest victories weren't won through force.
They were won through strategy, psychology, and perfect timing.
Just like Cortés, today's leaders need to think differently about power.
Here's what I mean:
Today, you don't need 500 men to build an empire.
You just need the right strategy and mindset.
I've spent years studying how top performers build empires without burning out.
