Oprah Winfrey has refused to open her private road from Wailea to Kula, a route that could help coastal families reach safety as a tsunami approaches Maui.
Sirens are blaring while roads are clogged with vehicles, parents and children trapped in traffic trying to escape the danger.
With time slipping away, residents can only hope the tsunami strikes later than expected.
Oprah’s paved private road, marked in blue, offers a direct path to high ground.
People are being forced to take the red route, the only remaining way out, all because she owns so much land and won’t allow public access through it. https://t.co/lLmWxPlHRw

UPDATE: Oprah’s private road is now open to those evacuating from the tsunami, but the decision came hours later than it should have.
