This lady exposed the dark truth about recycling.

She dropped an AirTag in her recycling bin to find out where it really went.

Her experiment uncovered a sinister 250-ton secret...

Here's the full story: 🧵
Meet Brandy Deason, a climate justice coordinator from Houston with a suspicion...

Her city's new 'All-Plastics' recycling initiative sounded too good to be true.

Instead of just wondering, she decided to investigate.

Her weapon of choice?

Pretty interesting ones...
Apple Airtags.

Deason's experiment was elegantly simple:

She placed AirTags in recycling bags, dropped them off, and watched.

As the digital breadcrumbs appeared on her screen, a disturbing pattern emerged.

Nine out of twelve tags led to the same place:

Wright Waste Management, 20 miles from downtown Houston.

A facility not yet approved to store plastic waste.

The plot thickened.

Deason and her team dug deeper, and they made some shocking discoveries:
Since late 2022, Houston has collected 250 tons of plastic for recycling.

Amount actually recycled? A big, round zero.

All that plastic was just... sitting there.

The city's explanation?
They're waiting.

Waiting for a new advanced sorting center run by Cyclyx International.

It's set to open next year, promising to revolutionize recycling.

But until then, the plastic piles grow higher.

The risks aren't just environmental:
Stored plastic creates fire hazards. If ignited, it could release toxic fumes
.
Nearby neighborhoods live under this invisible threat.

Deason's concerns were far from unfounded.

This isn't just Houston's dirty little secret...
From Berkeley to the UK to Canada, similar investigations have exposed flaws in the global recycling system.

E-waste in junkyards. Plastic dumped in Turkey. 'Recyclables' in landfills.

The problem is everywhere.

The hard truth about plastic recycling is sobering:
Only 5-6% of plastic actually gets a second life.

New plastic is often cheaper to produce than recycled, and most plastic degrades in quality with each cycle.

The 'recycling solution' we've been sold is falling apart.
That's the Wrap up🤩
